Writing a novel takes a huge amount of self-discipline. 

It just demands so much focused attention, over such an extended period of time, that you can’t be lazy and decide, well, I’d rather do something easier today -- you have to stick with it, even when you don’t feel particularly inspired. 

You just do it.
